how to start a daily home yoga practice

Starting a daily home yoga practice

starting a daily home yoga practice

“Close your eyes and imagine the best version of you possible. That’s who you really are. Let go of any part of you that doesn’t believe it.”

C. Assaad

The great thing about yoga is you don’t need a lot of equipment to get started. Props can be helpful to increase flexibility and accessibility to certain asanas, however, you can improvise too. You don’t even really need a yoga mat, however it is helpful if you get sweaty palms or want to try inversions and other balancing poses.

The key props are;

• Yoga mat (or a towel)

• Yoga block/s

• A strap

• A bolster

• A blanket

If you are new to yoga, find yourself in lockdown or are away traveling and can’t bring your props with you, look for items that resemble the props. A towel can do as a mat, a book instead of a block, a belt as a strap, a cushion as a bolster and any blanket is suitable. You can also practice yoga without any of these things.

Getting Started

Once you have some props, you need some guidance. There’s plenty of youtube videos and apps, or you can jump in to ‘The Yogi Hub’ on our home page for some beginner classes to follow along with right from your phone or laptop. Music can also help you to get out of your head. The benefits of a regular yoga practice isn’t just the mobility, strength and flexibility you can gain, the best benefit is finding calm, reducing cortisone (the stress hormone), and practicing mindfulness. A yoga practice doesn’t stop on the mat, a true yoga practice carries on in to your daily life.

A common misconception is that you need to be flexible to do yoga. Flexibility is the result of a regular yoga practice, not the requirement. Yoga is more than making pretty shapes, it’s about feeling in to your body, moving with the breath, gaining mobility and awareness, softening and flowing. It’s about how it feels, not how it looks.

An important thing to remember too, is that all bodies are built different, and some poses (asanas) just aren’t possible for some bodies, this is why we have modifications and props available to still receive the benefits not matter what body you live in.

Yoga is a dance between control and surrender – between pushing and letting go – and when to push and when to let go becomes part of the creative process, part of the open-ended exploration of your being.

– Joel Kramer

In the early stages just start where you are at, breathe in to each asana, using the breath to push a little deeper each time. Over time, what was once hard will be easy. It’s really important not to force your body in to asanas it’s not ready for. It’s not a race. It can take years of daily practice to achieve some of the shapes you see on Instagram, so have your expectations set accordingly. The most important part of the yoga practice is to ensure you are doing it safely.

Start with Sun Salutations to warm up the body or a beginner/all levels flow and do this on repeat every day. You don’t need to do a 90 minute session every day to gain benefits from yoga, even just 10 minutes of stretching and moving is enough some days, and rest days are ok too, try a meditation instead. Even the yogi masters wake up stiff in the mornings, so it’s important to warm the body up before attempting anything that could strain you.

What ever your reason is for starting a yoga practice, try not to compare yourself to others, do it for you, do it safely, breathe and enjoy the flow.

The Truth About Protein Powders

Not all protein powders are created equal!

Protein is one of the most popular supplements on the market today and they are more than just for performance and body building. They are also there to help support you with your health and wellness goals and help to preserve the most important asset in your body, your muscle tissue. Collagen protein nutrition is new in the market with many great benefits.

When it comes to meeting your protein needs supplementing often becomes a big part of your long term success. So, with that being said, what should you be looking out for and what should you be paying attention to?

Top 10 Things You Should Be Looking Out For When Choosing A Protein Supplement

Casein and Whey Protein Concentrate (WPC)

Also known as Whey Protein Concentrate and Caseinate. Casinates are often taken in the evening by body builders as they are very slow digesting, so they can help stimulate protein synthesis while you sleep. That being said, WPC’s and Caseinate protein sources are high in lactose and poorly absorbed. This can often cause bloating, flatulence and gastrointestinal distress to some people. It is also used as weight gainers in medical institutions.

There are 3 different types of Whey Proteins. Often all types get lumped together, however, there is a difference.

  • Whey Protein Concentrate is the cheapest form of whey protein, as a result many manufacturers use instead of Whey Isolate or Hydrozolate Whey Protein this to save money. There is usually only about 30%-40% actual protein by weight.
  • Now, Whey Hydrozolate tends to be a combination of whey protein isolate and concentrate and is often very bitter. So typically you will notice there will be a lot of sweeteners or artificial sweeteners added to counteract the taste.
  • Whey Protein Isolate is rich in Sistine to boost glutathione activity, rich in Amino Acids and removes over 99% of the lactose.

Food sensitivities to gluten can elevate inflammation in some people and cause a range of health problems including hormonal imbalances, skin conditions, fatigue, mood swings and headaches.

Typically protein is based on an animal source. When looking for a whey protein, if you’re trying to avoid Gluten, look for a grass-fed label. It will also be free of hormones and antibiotics. Most vegan proteins could be cross contaminated with gluten as they commonly are processed in plants that also process wheat products. So make sure you see Gluten Free on the label.

Dextrines and Maltodextrine

These can raise glycemic load, which may contribute to fat storage. Most are processed with GMO corn and they can also cause gastrointestinal distress in some people. They are mostly added to protein powders to bulk it out or to make the powder mix easier. So you want to look for labels that say No GMO.

Artificial Sweeteners

Commonly used artificial sweeteners are sucralose, splenda, acesulfame, potassium, aspartine, equal, NutraSweet or saccharin. Potential negative side affects from these are headaches, migraines, bloating, acid reflux and weight gain. These are around 200 times sweeter than sugar and incredible cheap to use. Sucralose is basically chlorinated sugar and the body has absolutely no way of getting rid of it. Artificial sweeteners can also stimulate appetite causing you to over-eat, in turn increase weight gain which negates why most people are taking it in the first place. When used consistently/daily, your risk of side affects increases.

Skim Milk Powders or Milk Solids

Skim milk powders and milk solids are commonly used as a cheap bulking agent in lower quality powders. They are high in lactose sugars, which can cause bloating, gastrointestinal distress, constipation and loose stools.

Soy Protein

Soy proteins come from genetically modified sources with high pesticide use. They contain chemical compounds which may cause hormonal disturbances in some people. These chemical compounds are known as Phytoestrogens. There are many cleaner ways to get the same benefits that is promoted in Soy.

Vegetable Oils And Fats

Often added to weight loss and protein powders to increase richness and make them taste creamy. However, these fats are usually derived from hydrogenated sources that contain trans fats, which are thought to be more harmful than saturated fats. Trans fats raise levels of bad cholesterol and lowed levels of good cholesterol. This can add to cardiovascular risk factors.

Thickeners And Gums

Thickeners and gums like carrageenan, guar gum, soy lecithin can cause bloating, constipation and gas. However, some have been shown to have some benefits like xanthan gum or sunflower lecithin. Often found in vegan products like almond milk, vegan forms of cheese and other non-dairy products, is Carageenan.

Sunflower lecithin can help improve your cognitive skills, your memory and attention span and decision making skills. It can promote liver functions and stimulate the elimination of fats from the body. In turn this lowers cholesterol and trygliceride levels.

Xanthan Gum has been shown to lower cholesterol and promote weight loss. It also can improve regularity and function.

Some fillers include ingredients such as coconut flour, psyllium and sugar which can cause bloating, constipation and reflux in people who are susceptible to digestive issues.

Added Fiber

Added fibers in protein powders are often included as a filler or weight management tool. It can cause gastric distress, constipation and bloating for people with sensitive digestive systems for example.

In short, often people will consume a whey isolate protein powder and have the side affects mentioned and associate it with the whey isolate. In fact it’s coming from the fillers and additives used to bulk up the product. You want to choose something that is very clean and very pure when choosing a protein powder.

I was never much of a protein powder person previously. Most had a thick texture, were hard to mix or just didn’t taste nice and were hard to drink. When I came across Fit20 and saw how easily it mixed and how good it tasted it had my attention!

The bonus facts I found out after, confirmed this one was the new choice for me. Being only 2g carbs and 0g sugars, without any fillers, I knew it not only tasted great but was also the healthiest option for me. It’s no wonder people feel so great on the 21 Day Reset with this clean & pure whey isolate collagen protein in their bodies!

Natural Performance Enhancer

Nitric Oxide – The Natural Performance Enhancer

Breaking down the science of Nitric Oxide production and the various different pathways available. Suitable for the athlete or for those who want more out of their workout, to get the best ROI on your time spent at the gym or for anyone needing an energy boost without a caffeine hit. However, this natural performance enhancer is not just for athletes and gym goers…

What is Nitric Oxide?

A molecule made up of one part oxygen and one part nitrogen, Nitric Oxide is a highly reactive gas that is produced naturally in the body. Studied extensively by physicians and researchers, it is known to repair, defend and maintain every cell of the body. Production of this life-giving molecule begins to decline as we age.

With today’s lifestyle factors and fast paced lifestyle, soil mineral depletion, poor diet, lack of exercise, cigarette smoke and other air pollutants, it’s never been more critical to support healthy levels of Nitric Oxide.

It supports a range of physiological functions in the body. Including proper inflammatory response, healthy circulation, correct digestion and normal memory and learning. Also correct oxygen release in tissues from red blood cells. Nitric Oxide is a natural vasodilator, it dilates the blood vessels in order to maintain proper cardiovascular health. Other benefits include;

  • Promotes a more restful sleep
  • Encourages normal lung health
  • Promotes natural resistance to to viruses and also bacteria
  • Assists the body with the wound healing process
  • Supports healthy fat burning within cells
  • Helps maintain healthy blood sugar levels

Our bodies can survive for 5-7 minutes without oxygen before the heart will suffer irreversible damage or cell death. However, without Nitric Oxide it only takes 5 seconds.

How do we increase Nitric Oxide?

Kyani developed each of it’s products with the experience and knowledge of a Scientific Advisory Board. Each member has an extensive background and have dedicated their lives to achieving health and wellness through advances in science and medicine. With expertise in Genetics, Health/Exercise Science, General Practition, Aesthetics in Medical Skin Care, Supplementation and Nutrition Science. These members certainly are well equipped to understand the human body and the effects of natural nutrition.

Combined, their extensive knowledge has lead to the creation of Kyani’s world class products. In fact, Dr. Burke began researching Nitric Oxide in the 90’s. His research company was the first to discover the correlation of the Noni plant and increased Nitric Oxide production in the body as a result.

As a result, Kyani Nitro FX and Nitro Xtreme were created!

Kyani Nitro Nutrition

These two powerful supplements boost Nitric Oxide production in the body, consequently called the molecule of life. Nitro Xtreme has the added benefits of 5 minerals; Zinc, Magnesium, CoQ10, Niacin and Chromium.

wild alaskan blueberries

The Benefits Of Wild Alaskan Blueberries

the benefits of wild alaskan blueberries

The Common Blueberry

It is known that blueberries have health benefits, but do you know what benefits they have exactly? In this article I will explain not only the benefits of the common blueberry, but also the benefits of the Wild Alaskan Blueberry and share why they are even more beneficial than the common blueberry!

Blueberries are full of nutrients like iron, magnesium, calcium, manganese, phosphorus, zinc and Vitamin K. Their skin has a rich pigment called anthocyanin, which is responsible for many of the health benefits.

They are low in calories but high in nutrients and are the king of antioxidant foods! Antioxidants protect your body from damaging free radicals.

Blueberries reduce DNA damage to protect against ageing. They can help with memory and support brain function and help to normalise blood pressure and blood sugar levels. So these delicious little berries can do a whole lot for your health and they taste great too!

The Wild Alaskan Blueberry

The wild alaskan blueberry is typically smaller in size with less water content – meaning more goodness per serve, and they are richer in colour. This is due to the harsh conditions the berry is grown in, making it one super tough little berry which is up to 5 times stronger than the common blueberry. They demonstrate a higher concentration of the antioxidant properties per serving.

This means you need less of them to get the same benefits, or more to supercharge the benefits!

How Do I Get Wild Alaskan Blueberries?

Ok so they sound great, but you’re not in Alaska? So, how do you get your hands on these super-berries?

Well, you’re in luck! Wild Alaskan Blueberries are the main ingredient in Kyani Sunrise! What’s even better is it’s in a concentrated form, that not only provides you with optimum nutrition but also tastes great!

How To Eliminate Under Eye Circles

A common problem people face is dark circles or bags under the eyes. The skin beneath the eye is very thin and fragile and is often the first place we start to show the signs of age. And thus the eye area needs to be cared for differently. So, let’s have a look at how to eliminate under eye circles…

What are under eye circles?

Under eye circles are often caused by blood pooling beneath the skin under the eyes. This is often due to inflammation causing the blood vessels to become constricted. It is usually more noticeable in the morning as you have spent the last 8 hours laying flat without the help of gravity to get the blood moving.

eliminate under eyecircles and eye bags

What causes under eye circles?

Allergies & Congestion – When your sinuses are stuffy, it causes the blood vessels around the eyes to dilate, in turn causing the eyes to darken.

Sleep Deprivation – No sleep results in high inflammation levels. This makes it hard for your inflamed blood vessels to drain the blood from under the eyes.

Too Much Salt – Loading up on the salt causes fluid retention all over the body. This can cause darkness and puffiness around the eyes.

Crying – Shedding tears increases inflammation around the eyes leading to dark circles.

Age – As we age, the skin around our eyes gets thinner. This makes the blood vessels under the skin more visible. Fortunately there are things you can do to improve this.

Hyperpigmentation – If the darkness under the eye is brown in colour and doesn’t fluctuate, this may be hyperpigmentation. The causes of this could be sun exposure, it could be hereditary or trauma to the eye.

What can you do about it?

Stay Hydrated – This will help to reduce the Salt in the system.

Increase Circulation – Get moving! Any kind of physical exercise will help to improve circulation. Walking, running, going to the gym, yoga, anything to get the blood flowing in the body to improve your circulation.

Introduce Topical Peptides – Peptides are a smaller version of protein made out of amino acids. Amino acids are essential to maintaining healthy and youthful skin.

Peptides vs Collagen Explanation

Caring for the skin around the eye

With the skin around the eye being the most delicate, it’s important to ensure you’re caring for it the right way. Making the right lifestyle choices and using the right products on the skin to reduce the inflammation. Hopefully these tips have helped you to learn a little more about how to eliminate under eye circles.

The Compounding Effect Of Consistency

work out harder

When you set yourself a goal, wether it be a health or fitness goal, a career goal, a financial goal, or a family goal, there will always be struggles. There will always be elements of it that we don’t want to do or find difficult. Let’s face it, if it were easy you would already have it. The difference between the ones who are succeeding, is that they will do what ever it takes to get through it, that is to say they are willing to do what others simply won’t! It is the compounding effect of consistency. Do you want to eat better? Work out harder? Increase your income? Lose weight? Run faster? All of these take consistent action and also discipline to reach.

Your result is defined by what you choose to be consistent in. Do you choose to be consistent in eating junk and watching Netflix or do you choose to be consistent in eating healthy and moving your body daily? Do you choose to be consistent in doing the bare minimum in your work/business or do you choose to be consistent in learning and growing and also putting in the extra effort? You are going to be consistent in something, but is that something bringing you closer to or further from your goal?

5 Steps To Get The results You Want

  • Keep your eyes on the prize. If you focus on the result you want, you are more likely to achieve it. You can’t hit a target that you can’t see. Have clarity on the desired outcome. Visualise it. Then work out the daily steps you need to take to reach it. If you want to work out harder, what exactly is it you want to do? Go for longer? Lift heavier weights? Increase your flexibility? Maybe you just started working out and you are working out for 30 minutes but you want to increase it to an hour at a time. If you want to lose weight, how much weight and in what time frame? Be specific in what you want and then take the relative actions to get there.

  • The power of one. Expecting to change years of bad habits overnight will only set you up for failure. A lifestyle of poor choices is going to take time to undo, so allow yourself that time, come up with a plan to gradually change your ways. It takes 30 days to form new habits. So, rather than overwhelming yourself with a tonne of things to change to get to where you want to be, just pick one. Make one change. Start there and focus on that for 30 days, then once you are on top of that, then pick another. Anyone who has ever achieved anything big in life, has done it one step at a time.

  • Schedule it. Don’t proiritize your schedule, schedule your priorities. You need to take a serious look at your daily habits and take inventory. Look at what you are doing on a daily basis and ask yourself, ‘Is this the way to get me closer to my goal? Or is it taking me further from my goal?’ Focus on the habits that will get you where you want to go and prioritize that in your schedule. You may not always ‘feel’ like doing it, but when it becomes part of your daily routine you’ll be in the habit of doing it.

  • Check your emotion. Some days you just won’t feel like it, you’ll think you just can’t do it. Consistency teaches you the discipline to stick with it, even on the days you don’t want to or you’re too tired. By following the engagement of consistency you give yourself no choice but to change. And let’s face it, you need to change in order to get the result you want. Watch your self talk, catch yourself when you start thinking – I can’t, I don’t feel like it, I’m too tired, it hurts, it’s too hard and know that pushing through it all, that is where the magic happens!

  • Stay the course. Everyone falls off the wagon at times, but you don’t fail until you quit. By not picking yourself up again and continuing, you are only self sabotaging your success. Be gentle on yourself. It’s ok to have bad days. Be flexible, but stay committed to your success. It needs to be a lifestyle. You need to make a commitment to the life or the result you want.

It doesn’t mean that all of this is easy. There will still be challenges and obstacles. These challenges and obstacles are exactly what we need in order to build our resilience. Rather than focusing on what you can’t do, focus on what you CAN do. You need to have a strong goal and a powerful why as this helps you navigate through the tough days. The days you want to sleep in, the days you want to snack and eat junk, the days you want to stay home instead of working. Those days will come, but if you’re prepared, you will see it through.

Imagine yourself at your end goal. What does it mean to you to work out harder? To earn more money? To be healthier? Focus on the outcome and the daily steps to get you a littler closer each day, then it won’t seem like such a momentous task and overwhelm you.

Vitamin absorption

How To Absorb More Vitamins

how to absorb more vitamins

We all understand the importance of vitamins in the human body, but have you ever wondered if you are getting the most out of them? There are two important factors in how to absorb more of your vitamin intake, wether from superfoods or supplements. Firstly, the bio-availability of the vitamin and secondly, ensuring the body is primed to absorb the vitamins. The body will excrete any vitamin it is unable to absorb.

When the supplement comes in the form of a pressed capsule, it can take the body longer to break it down. In turn some of the nutritional content is lost. Liquid and lipid soluble vitamins are easier to absorb due to them being readily available to enter the blood stream. This means the body maintains more nutritional value as a result.

Having good oxygen and blood flow is an important factor in priming the body to absorb more vitamins which comes with added benefits in itself.

Another important factor is the time of day you take specific vitamins and also where your vitamin intake is coming from. Knowing the best time of day to take your vitamins is important as our bodies process differently at night and day time.

Here, Dr. Andreas explains.

To sum up

It’s actually easier than you think to absorb the daily vitamin intake you need.

With a simple wellness system, you can take out the guess work and feel assured knowing your body is actually getting the nutrients it needs on a daily basis. Therefore, saving you time and money. Not to mention the benefits of increased energy and quality of life you achieve as a result.

How to Boost Your Immune System with Zinc

boost your immune system

Wondering how to boost your immune system during the winter months? Zinc is an essential mineral that you must get from your diet, your body can not produce or store it, but it’s incredibly important to have as it’s involved with over 300 enzymatic reactions within the human body. Everything from nerve function to immune system function, effects on learning and memory, wound healing, balance hormones, also growth and development.

Zinc is added to the Kyani Nitro Xtreme product to assist you in getting your daily dose of this essential nutrient.

Nitro Xtreme also contains CoQ10, Magnesium, Niacin and Chromium in addition to the Noni plant to promote Nitric Oxide production in the body for added benefits.

Signs of Zinc deficiency include;

  • Changes in appetite, like craving sweet or salty foods
  • Weight gain or loss
  • Hair loss
  • Digestive problems
  • Hormonal issues, worsened PMS or Menopause
  • Lowered immunity
  • Poor concentration
  • Skin infections or irritations
  • Nerve dysfunction
  • Infertility

Whilst Zinc is an important mineral, the body doesn’t have a way to hang on to it. In particular if you’re an athlete or you work out often, you are likely to lose large amounts of Zinc through your sweat increasing the need to supplement and eat foods rich in Zinc.

Watch the video below to learn more about why it’s so important to ensure you’re getting enough Zinc in your diet and how it can help to boost your immune system.
